Types Of Coffee Beans

Coffee beans are grown in more than 50 countries around the world. For the first time, it was discovered in Ethiopia thousands of years ago. It was soon cultivated and then spread around the world. At present, coffee comes mostly from Latin America, Western Africa and the Philippines. Coffee is also abundantly found in Indonesia and southeastern Asia.

While there are many types or varieties of coffee available in the consumer market, but there are really only two main species of coffee plant. Each of them has a different characteristic based on the growing region, the picking method, the roasting method and finally the actual coffee preparation. The first one is the Arabica. It is the most traditional brand and is considered to be far superior in flavor. The other one, Robusta, is rich in caffeine and tastes far bitterer and more acidic, because of which it is less preferable for most domestic use.

Coffee Arabica
Coffee Arabica
Coffee Arabica, firstly was originated in Ethiopia, but later became the most popular and widely grown type of coffee in the world. They have a milder, less acidic taste than robusta beans, but are also more delicate and harder to grow. Arabica beans grow best at a height of 3,000 to 6,000 feet and temperatures ranging from 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. That is, they are mostly grown in equatorial regions such as Brazil and Vietnam in the higher reaches.

Coffee Robusta
Coffee Robusta
Coffee Robusta, is far more robust than its arabica cousin. These plants grow in a wider range of climates, and are able to tolerate all those diseases that coffee arabica cannot. It is mostly by people, because of its acidic and bitter taste. They have more than twice the caffiene content of coffee arabica.
