Different Types of Coffee Beans

Species of coffee plant include Coffea arabica, Coffea benghalensis, Coffea canephora, Coffea congensis, Coffea excelsa, Coffea gallienii, Coffea bonnieri, Coffea mogeneti, Coffea liberica, and Coffea stenophylla. The seeds of different species produce coffee with slightly different characteristics.

Coffea arabica accounts for about 75% of the world's coffee trade, while Coffea canephora (Coffea robusta) is cultivated where Coffea arabica does not thrive, and Coffea liberica and Coffea excelsa are grown in limited areas. Sometimes a crop of coffee may have a small percentage of cherries that contain a single bean, instead of the usual two. This is called a peaberry.

One can get confused by the variety of freshly roasted coffee beans available in the market. A country-wise classification may offer some help to understand the different kinds of coffee beans.

• African coffee beans have well-rounded flavor, medium to full body, and a bright spark of acidity. They are often described as floral or winy.

• The Americas offer coffees from South America, the Caribbean, and Hawaii and are known for good balance, medium body, bright acidity, and floral hints.

• Asia and Indonesia coffee beans are known for their full body, light acidity, aromatic flavor, and earthiness.

You should be able to spot the different kinds of coffees being made available in your local store or online coffee sotres for other rare coffee beans that come available from around the world! Once you find out what you like best you could also make sure to learn the best way to brew a particular kind of coffee.
